“We gather up our hearts and go / A thousand kisses deep.” —Leonard Cohen

What does it mean to love deeply—without losing ourselves in the process?

A Thousand Kisses Deep is a practical and insightful guide to love, relationship, and emotional growth, blending Buddhist wisdom with the realities of modern partnership. It speaks directly to those navigating connection, conflict, desire, and change.

In Part One, Shantigarbha explores the foundations of love—loving-kindness, compassion, friendship, and the opening of the heart. In Part Two, these insights are brought into intimate relationships, where love becomes a living, evolving practice.

Through themes of self-love, communication, conflict, and loss, this book offers clear guidance for working with the challenges that arise when we come close to another person.

Drawing on Buddhist teachings, lived experience, and nonviolent communication, A Thousand Kisses Deep helps transform reactive patterns into deeper understanding, connection, and care.

Shantigarbha is a Buddhist mediator and activist. He is an experienced teacher of both Buddhism and Nonviolent Communication (NVC). After studying Classics and Philosophy at Keble College, Oxford, he devoted himself full-time to the Buddha’s teachings. Ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order in 1996, he was given the name Shantigarbha, which means ‘Seed or Womb of Peace’. Through his practice of Buddhism, he came across NVC and has been sharing it as a certified trainer since 2004.

Within the Triratna Buddhist Community, he holds responsibilities as an Order Convenor, a member of the International Council and supporting restorative practices.

He has trained members of Extinction Rebellion in Nonviolence and De-escalation skills.

His first book, I’ll Meet You There: A Practical Guide to Empathy, Mindfulness and Communication, came out in 2018. His latest book, published in 2021, is The Burning House: A Buddhist Response to the Climate and Ecological Emergency.
