'While I was travelling in the Holy Land...the desire grew on me to make a Christian pilgrimage from the Euphrates to the Nile, and into Sinai, and to tell the story of the Christian life of the Near East,' writes H. V. Morton. 'This book is the result of my journey.' Taking the early history of Christianity as his guiding theme, Morton's travelled in the 1930s from Cairo to the Sinai, from Babyion to Baghdad, from Coptic monasteries to the churches of Rome. This account of his journey is full of the colour, history and vivid evocation his millions of readers have come to expect: a travel book that brings its subject absolutely to life and remains as fresh today as when it was first published. Through Lands of the Bible is the third volume of Morton's famous trilogy, which also includes in the Steps of the Master and in the Steps of St Paul.
A Fleet Street reporter, H. V. Morton fought in the First World War and was present at the opening of Tutankhamen's tomb. One of the century's most popular travel writers, he published travelogues from Spain, Italy and the Middle East as well as the famous series on the Britlsh Isles. After the Second World War Morton moved to a farm in South Africa, where he died in 1979.
