Celebrating 65 years of one of the most popular children's stories ever written, this anniversary edition of Philippa Pearce's Carnegie Medal winner with a foreword by Children's Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce will enchant readers everywhere.
When Tom is sent to stay at his aunt and uncle's house for the summer, he resigns himself to endless weeks of boredom. Lying awake at night, he hears the old grandfather clock downstairs strike . . . eleven . . . twelve . . . thirteen . . . Thirteen! How strange! When Tom gets up to investigate, he discovers a magical garden. A garden that everyone told him doesn't exist. A garden that only he can enter . . .
In this enchanted thirteenth hour, the garden comes alive-but Tom is never sure whether the children he meets there are real or ghosts . . .
Tom's Midnight Garden is one of the best-loved children's books of all time.
Philippa Pearce spent her childhood in Great Shelford, a village near Cambridge, and was the youngest of four children of a flour-miller and corn-merchant. The village, the river, and the countryside in which she lived appear more or less plainly in Minnow on the Say, and Tom's Midnight Garden.
Philippa later went on to study English and History at Cambridge University. She worked for the BBC as a scriptwriter and producer, and then in publishing as an editor. She has written many books including the modern classic, Tom's Midnight Garden, for which she won the Carnegie Medal. She has been awarded the OBE for services to Children's Literature.
Sadly, Philippa died in 2006, at the age of 86.
