Ulrich Beck has emerged as one of the leading thinkers of the age. His principal claim to fame is as author of the widely acclaimed 'Risk Society', first published in 1986. Gabe Mythen is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Liverpool. He has been researching in the field of public understandings of risk for several years, having published noted articles on risk society situations, such as BSE and GM foods. He is presently involved in research around the dynamics of the risk communications process and coordinates a number of undergraduate courses revolving around risk, urban cultures and sociocultural practices.
