Following the Battle of Wounded Knee in 1890, the US Cavalry were called into action again with the declaration of war against Spain in 1898.

In the years that followed, cavalrymen saw action in a wide variety of theaters. This title takes a close look at the formation and experiences of the average cavalryman in this fascinating period of change and development, and also considers the cavalry officer corps.

Numerous developments in dress, training, equipment, weaponry and tactics are all covered here.

Alexander M. Bielakowski has a PhD from Kansas State University. He has written numerous articles on military history, and has a special interest in inter-war cavalry. In 2000 he was awarded a West Point Fellowship in Military History. He is an Associate Professor of Military History at the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Raffaele Ruggeri studied at the Fine Arts Academy and worked in several areas of graphics and design before deciding to devote himself to illustration. He has long been interested in military history and has illustrated a number of books for Osprey including Men-at-Arms 269 ‘The Ottoman Army 1914-18’.
