The US Marine Corps were the first US combat troops ashore in the Vietnam War, and for the next eight years they were involved in some of the bloodiest and hardest fought engagements of the whole conflict. This history covers the development, battles, organization, arms and equipment of all Marine units deployed in the South-East Asian Theatre of Operations from the USMC through the Koreans and Thias to the native Vietnamese.

Charles Melson joined the Marines in 1967. Among other conflicts, his service included the war in Vietnam. From 1986, he has been a writer for the Marine Corps Historical Centre and a working member of the Marine Corps Uniform Board. His work for Osprey includes Elite 55: Marine Recon 1940–90 and Warrior 23 US Marine in Vietnam 1965–1973.

Paul Hannon is based in London and is a highly experienced military artist who has produced artwork for several Osprey volumes, including MAA 169: Resistance Warfare and MAA 156: The Royal Marines.
