In September 1930 nearly 400,000 children were evacuated from London, followed by many more from other cities in the UK.

Many of them were unaccompanied, and for most it was the first time away from home and parents. Yet this well-known disruption of childhood was a drop in the ocean compared to the effect of conflict on children throughout the world. Children have always been the victims of war, and this fascinating new history examines the effects of war on the young, including those from Britain, Germany and Finland during and after the Second World War, as well as children in more recent conflicts in West Africa, among many others. Taking first-hand accounts from survivors, diaries and authentic documents, this eye-opening history reflects the untold story of hundreds of thousands of children whose lives were affected by the horrors of war.

Dr Martin Parsons is Director of the new International Research Centre for Evacuee and War Child Studies at the University of Reading. He has lectured at various Universities throughout the world, and holds several posts, including Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Evacuees Reunion Association and President of the International Federation of Evacuees and War Children. Martin has given guest lectures at the English Speaking Union and the Cabinet War Rooms. He was a consultant on the BAFTA winning 'Britain at War in Colour' documentary for Channel 4 and has contributed to many TV and radio programmes including 'The Evacuees' as part of the Lost Decade series on BBC4. In 2000 he co-researched the Radio 4 series on Evacuation that won the Sony Gold Award for 'Best Documentary'. Considered by many as an expert in his field and the author of more than twenty-five books, in 2000 Martin was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
