This pedagogical study makes a theoretical contribution toward further understanding of the concepts of power, ideology, governance, the roles and rights of citizens, democracy, constitutions, the corporate foundation of the state, and the nature of the dynamic relationship among the states. It looks specifically at developing countries and the industrial world, giving serious comparative thought to historical, sociological, and political concerns. Significantly, the three actors central to the study-the state, its citizens, and private corporations-are consistently at odds. The conflicting relationship between the three is characterized by the struggle for self-interest, self-preservation, and consensus, which varies based on the nature of the nation-state and its geopolitical location.
Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo is Professor of Political Science at Wells College. He has taught political science in many colleges and universities in the United States and Africa. He also is currently Visiting Research Fellow at the Center for the Study of International Cooperation in Education, Hiroshima University, Japan, and Visiting Scholar in the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Lumumba-Kasongo has extensively published books and articles, and conducted research projects in the areas of international relations, political economy, and world politics. He is also the author of Political Re-mapping of Africa: Transnational Ideology and the Redefinition of Africa in World Politics also from University Press of America.
