THE MULTIMILLION-COPY BESTSELLING QUEEN OF CLASSIC CRIME, DOROTHY L SAYERS

'Dorothy L. Sayers is one of our best detective story writers' Daily Telegraph

'One of crime fiction's most memorable detectives' The New York Times

'She brought to the detective novel originality, intelligence, energy and wit' P. D. James

Introducing Dorothy L Sayers's legendary private investigator, Lord Peter Wimsey.

The body of a stout man, wearing nothing except a golden pince-nez, is discovered in the bath of an architect's London flat.

The police quickly determine the man's identity to be that of famous financier Sir Reuben Levy, who disappeared from his lodgings the night before.

But though the corpse greatly resembles the missing magnate, it soon becomes clear that it is someone else entirely. But who?

Amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey, with the aid of his great friend, Inspector Charlie Parker, resolves to get to the bottom of this mystery, once and for all.

'Part of the Golden Age of mystery writers working between the wars, Sayers is often credited as the most intelligent of them all' Guardian

'What elevated Sayers's debut to the upper ranks of the genre was the quality of her prose and the sense that her sleuth had more emotional heft than he displayed' The New York Times

'Lord Peter should become one of the best known and best loved among the many amateur detectives of fiction' The New York Herald

Dorothy L Sayers was born in Oxford in 1893, and was both a classical scholar and a graduate in modern languages. As well as her popular Lord Peter Wimsey series, she wrote several religious plays, but considered her translations of Dante's Divina Commedia to be her best work. She died in 1957.
