By comparison to the high profile of the New Frankfurt housing estates, post-war housing construction in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region has led a shadowy existence - although the achievements of this period should not be underestimated, by any means. In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, numerous housing estates of excellent urban planning and architectural quality were built, some of which are not at all well-known. They are presented in this publication.

A further aim is to dispel the still widespread prejudice assuming that these estates are monotonous and impersonal. The book invites the reader to take a closer look at the ten examples presented. Especially today, when the construction of new urban districts is being seriously discussed once more, they deserve a differentiated study. The buildings here were constructed with high standards of design and with social principles that can serve as a model for future settlements in many respects.

Maren Harnack: Architektin, Stadtplanerin, Hochschullehrerin an der Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.
