This second selection of over 200 old photographs takes us on a journey around Woodhouse. From the village centre, the book takes us to many areas within Woodhouse, including Beaver Hill Road, Woodhouse Mill, Shirtcliffe Wood, Cliff Wheel, Birley East Pit and Normanton Springs. Through this fascinating pictoral history we discover the changes that have swept through Woodhouse and on some occasions the similarities that remain today.
These pictures will bring memories flooding back – the unmistakable sound of miners clogs as they walked home through the streets of Woodhouse, the open fields which have since become housing estates and the old narrow streets which were widened to make way for the car. More recent residents of the area will discover that within Woodhouse today there are many visible links to the past, such as the road and street names.
Local historian and author, Leonard Widdowson, has drawn upon a variety of sources, including his own photographs, taken with a modest camera since the early1950s, to compile a rich photographic history of Woodhouse.
