The interplay between work and health has long been recognized through almost a century of research. In Work and Health, the authors summarize and build on this foundation by focusing on the complex and bidirectional relationships between work and health. There is little doubt that various aspects of the work environment contribute to individual physical and mental health. However, there is also growing recognition that individual employees' health issues may manifest in the workplace and that individual health has direct and indirect effects on workplace behaviors. Accordingly, this volume advances the argument that health is an organizational issue--organizations benefit through addressing health issues and, correspondingly, incur the costs of ignoring such issues. By extension, organizations have both the incentive and the obligation to address issues of employee health. Covering topics such as sleep and telework, physical activity and physical health, positive mental health, and toxic work environments, this book offers valuable insights and suggestions for future research for organizations and individuals alike.
