With contributions from international authors, this text demonstrates that education systems, and what it is to be educated, are in transition and that societies and economies are changing dramatically. The contributors explore expanding university systems, financial responsibilities and curricula.

David Coulby is Professor of Education and Dean of Education and Human Sciences Faculty at Bath Spa University College, United Kingdom. He has published widely on intercultural education and special education in Europe. His current book Old Knowledge, New Societies is shortly to be published by Falmer.,
Crispin Jones is Senior Lecturer in Education at the Institute of Education, London University, United Kingdom, where he works in the International Centre for Intercultural Studies and the Culture, Communication and Societies academic group. His especial interests are in urban and intercultural education. Much of his recent work has been in the areas of education and conflict resolution and the educational needs of refugees. Currently he is working on a book with David Coulby on the interrelationship between the educational systems of Europe and war and violence. He has been associated with the World Yearbook of Education since 1992 and became one of the series editors in 1995.
