The Zipper family welcome the arrival of their son's friend and the boy is fascinated by their cosy suburban life. However, as the two friends mature their lives take different paths - the army, university, early career choices and a disastrous marriage to an aspiring actress all take their toll - and each has a very different story to tell. Joseph Roth (1894-1939) was the great elegist of the cosmopolitan, tolerant and doomed Central European culture that flourished in the dying days of the Austrian Empire. He wrote thirteen novels, including Job and The Radetzky March. Much of his work has been published in English by Granta Books.
