This book presents in a compact form the basic comprehensive data in glycoscience, an extremely developing field including molecular and cell biology, chemistry and biochemistry, many aspects of human diseases, biotechnology and pharmacology. The book includes data about the peculiarity of the unique structure of simple carbohydrates and complex glycoconjugates, their non-template biosynthesis, degradation, variety of biological properties and role in living cell and organisms. The special chapters of this book highlight hereditary diseases, such as lysosomal storage diseases and congenital disorders of glycosylation, and also lactose intolerance, glycation, cancer and other human diseases. The book will be useful for wide auditorium, starting from senior students of colleges, medical schools, and also for scientist involved in glycoscience/glycobiology research.

About Gherman Wiederschain
Gherman Wiederschain became MD in 1962 obtained his PhD in 1967 and became a Doctor of Science in 1979 at the Institute of Biomedical Chemistry (IBC) Academy of Medical Science of USSR. In the IBC Gherman held the position of Professor and Chief of a biochemical laboratory until he moved to the United States in 1993. The research of Dr Wiederschain focused on a variety of aspects of glycobiology in the normal state and diseases including biochemistry of lysosomal storage diseases. In 2000-2011 Dr Wiederschain worked at Shire where he contributed to the enzyme replacement therapy and analytical methods for a variety of LSD. In 2011-2014 Dr Wiederschain was a Research Associate Professor in the Biology Department of Boston College USA. He is the author of two books (Biochemical Bases of Glycosidoses and Glycobiology and Human Diseases) and more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Currently Dr Wiederschain is an instructor in the Glycobiology and Human Disease seminar course in the Biology Department of Boston College.
