Pain and pleasure, wonder and menace, surprise and disgust combine so that time and time again the reader bridges the distance between appearance and reality. As we have it in Macbeth – Are such things here as we do speak about or have we eaten on the insane root that takes the reason prisoner? This feeling of insecurity and ambiguity is the hallmark pervading many of Flores’ unpretentious poems as in Party; You of the Laughing Eyes; Marshmallow Mountains and the sad beauty pervading the questioning verse of The In-Between:
the whole of my brain
the whole of my soul
are sadly lost in the feverish despair
of what could be, but hasn’t been,
where truth lies
where stands the shadow
of my real self.
