The present story is set in the first half ofthe 19thcentury, during the Napoleonicwars and the Regency period. Callyand her adoptive sister, Polly, rebelagainst almost every rule in the book. At a time when most young women oftheir class are housebound, decorous anddocile, the sisters are activists in the causesof prison reform, the abolition of slaveryand the long campaign for universalsuffrage. In 1820, they are party to theCato Street conspiracy. They attend Quakermeetings, although atheist.Their dress is often unorthodox, includingbreeches when always riding astraddle,neverside-saddle.
