Richard Ellis – The Photography Collection Sliema & St Julian's - Volume 3

Hardback

By (author): Ian Ellis

This is the third volume in the Series based on the Richard Ellis Photography Collection. Following the success of the first and second volumes covering Valletta & Floriana and Grand Harbour & cottonera respectively, this new volume covers Sliema & St. Julian’s.

Master photographer Richard Ellis left his legacy, an invaluable collection of images of Malta, its history and development, during the Victorian and Edwardian periods of the British colonial era, to his heirs. Ian Ellis, his great grandson, has consented to share a distilled selection with the public at large.

The photographs are supplemented by contributions from the popular newspaper columnist and artist Kenneth Zammit Tabona who describes his experiences of growing up in Sliema and Edward Said, a young architect, with a deep passion for the history of architecture and all things related to Sliema.

The Complete archive contains some 36,000 images, most of which are glass-plate negatives, the oldest coinciding with Richard Ellis’ arrival in Malta in 1862. The photographs, mostly taken on a large-format studio camera, have been carefully reproduced from the original glass plates using the latest digital technology.

Richard Ellis has given the Maltese nation a treasure of timeless images placing Malta in the forefront in the development of photography from its infancy. The Richard Ellis Collection is an invaluable source of reference for photographic and historical research.
