The Child at the Edge of the World

English

By (author): Alex Charlton

Laura Jamieson and Jem Walker are both haunted by tragic past events. When they meet in the Yorkshire Dales, Laura is still fragile from a controlling and abusive relationship, and Jem is struggling to reintegrate into the rural society where he was born, after spending years as a friar trying to come to terms with his past.

Sharing a passionate love of the natural world and showing sensitivity to humans and animals alike, they seem to be a perfect couple, but will their deep feelings of guilt and unworthiness prove to be an insurmountable barrier? And will the host of unanswered questions which haunt Jem ever be answered?

About Alex Charlton

Alex grew up in the North of England and because her father who was a well-known jazz musician inspired her to try anything that life threw in her path she enjoyed an eclectic childhood before heading off to University to study English.  This philosophy has stayed with her always and is reflected in her novels which are about ordinary people who face extraordinary situations and frequently pose the question 'What if?'She now lives in the Yorkshire Dales with her loyal Labradors and husband who has the patience of a saint when it comes to her unconventional lifestyle. Before settling into life in her beloved Yorkshire and full-time writing she enjoyed various careers in London and high-profile positions in education in the west country. The inspiration for this book The Child at the Edge of the World was Alex's few years as an unexpected shepherd on a remote farm.  It was a steep learning curve but she loved every moment and still misses the bustle of lambing and the new life everywhere.Alex is passionate about exploring the beauty of the natural world and has been fortunate to be able to see many parts of it inspiring her to regularly practice Tai Chi and Yoga with her like-minded friends.
