English

By (author): Arthur Conan Doyle

One of the BBC's '100 Novels that Shaped the World'

'Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!'

The death, quite suddenly, of Sir Charles Baskerville in mysterious circumstances is the trigger for one of the most extraordinary cases ever to challenge the brilliant analytical mind of Sherlock Holmes. As rumours of a legendary hound said to haunt the Baskerville family circulate, Holmes and Watson are asked to ensure the protection of Sir Charles' only heir, Sir Henry - who has travelled all the way from America to reside at Baskerville Hall in Devon. About Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) started to write as a doctor whilst waiting for patients to arrive. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in A Study in Scarlet (1887). The Holmes stories soon attracted such a following that Conan Doyle felt the character overshadowed his other work. In The Final Problem (1893) Conan Doyle killed him off but was obliged by public demand to restore the detective to life.
