Stratum VentilationAdvanced Air Distribution for Low-Carbon and Healthy Buildings: Working Principles, Design and Operation Methods, and Application Scenarios

English

This book investigates the creation of healthy and thermally comfortable built environments in a low-carbon manner with advanced air distribution, i.e., stratum ventilation. Stratum ventilation efficiently supplies conditioned and clean air to the head level of occupants for thermal comfort and inhaled air quality and largely reduces energy consumption and CO2 emission, e.g., by 44% and 32%, respectively, compared with the conventional air distribution method. This book provides the working principles, performance evaluations methods, design methods, operation methods, and different application scenarios (particularly highlighting airborne infection risk control of respiratory diseases and integrated application with renewable energy) of stratum ventilation, to provide theoretical understandings and technical guidelines of stratum ventilation. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers who are interested in cutting-edge technologies of livable and sustainable built environments.

About

Dr. Sheng Zhang received his B.E. degree in Energy and Environment Application Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2014 and Ph.D. degree in Building Services from City University of Hong Kong in 2020. He served as a postdoc in City University of Hong Kong for one year and has been in Xian Jiaotong University as an associate professor since Feb 2021. Dr. Zhang academic achievements include 1) developing adaptiverational thermal comfort models and systematic ventilation performance indices; 2) proposing control principles and methods of non-uniform collective thermal environment for individual thermal preferences; 3) proposing mechanisms and methods for non-pandemic and pandemic ventilation control; and 4) developing air source and ground source-based renewable heating and cooling energy systems. Dr. Zhang has published more than 60 SCI papers o JCR Q1 journals and serves in the young editorial board of international journal of Building Simulation.    Prof. Yong Cheng received his B.E. and M.E. degrees in Built Environment and Energy Application Engineering from Hunan University in 2008 and Heating Gas Supply Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering from Tongji University in 2011 respectively and the Ph.D. degree in Building Services from City University of Hong Kong in 2015. Prof. Cheng focuses on the research of Building Ventilation. His recent research interests include: advanced air distribution human thermal comfort contaminant dispersion building energy efficiency etc. Since 2014 Prof. Cheng has published around 70 peer-reviewed academic papers in international journals and conferences and received around 10 research projects. He is a member of ISIAQ and served as a reviewer of several international journals and session co-chair of Roomvent 2022 and ISHVAC-COBEE 2015.   Prof. Zhang Lin is the chair professor in Built Environment at City University of Hong Kong. Prof. Lin received his B.E. degree in Air Conditioning from Tsinghua University in 1983 and his Ph.D. degree in Processing and Environmental Technology from Massey University in 1995. Prof. Lins research interests are built environment and renewable energy systems including advanced air distribution indoor and outdoor thermal comfort indoor air quality solar energy systems etc. Prof. Lin has published more than 180 SCI papers and is among the worlds Top 2% of scientists. He is a member of the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers the Institution of Engineers of Australia the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers the Extended Building Committee Building Department the Hong Kong SAR government etc. Prof. Lin is the editorial board member of international journals of building simulation and buildings.
