Bill Lawry: Chasing a century

English

By (author): Bill Lawry

Born in 1937, William Morris Bill Lawry AM is one of the cricketing legends from the era of Bob Simpson, Colin MacDonald, Fred Trueman, and the early years of Ian Chappell, Doug Walters, Ashley Mallett, Rod Marsh and Paul Sheahan. His first Ashes tour as part of the Australian cricket team was in 1961, and he soon became known for his slow and steady accumulation of runs.

As an opening batsman his resolute defence meant he spent long periods at the crease. In 1962 Wisden named Lawry as a Cricketer of the Year. Bill led the Australian cricket team as captain in 25 tests from 1967 to 1970, and also captained Australia in the first One Day International match in 1971. After his retirement, he became a beloved fixture of Australian cricket commentary for over 30 years.

Bill Lawry: Chasing a Century gathers together tales from colleagues, players, cricket writers and those who listened to his broadcasts every summer, bringing his career to life and reminding us of the colossal contribution he has made to Australian cricket. See more

About Bill Lawry

Bill Lawry was one of Australias great cricketers. He made his debut in 1961 and scored over 2000 runs in his first tour of England. In his first Ashes series his captain was Richie Benaud who became a life-long friend. Bill Lawry enjoyed a stellar Ashes career hitting 2233 runs from his 29 appearance. His average of 48.54 was aided by seven centuries and a defiant approach that made him one of the toughest openers to dislodge. In Bill Lawrys first full series as captain he took a youthful side to England in 1968. Eight of the 17 players on tour would make their Ashes debut that year including Ian Chappell Paul Sheahan and Doug Walters. As well as being Australias 32nd Test captain he opened the batting line up and remains number 20 in the list of best opening batsmen of all time in terms of batting average and No. 22 on the list of most runs scored as opener that is out of the over 900 opening batsmen in Test cricket history. In recent decades he is most commonly recognised for his more than 30 years of commentary with the Channel 9 team.
