This practical approach to the topic provides researchers with a solid grounding in the application-oriented use of transmission electron microscopy to investigate catalytic materials, thus serving not only as an introduction but also as a useful resource in everyday lab work. Written by renowned researchers with a solid experience in both catalysis and electron microscopy, the authors describe the basic theoretical aspects while avoiding complex physical and mathematical models yet still providing the competence needed for a correct interpretation of the data. The applications of each technique to catalysts of any family are addressed, including 2D and 3D methodologies in different modes, as are the main experimental approaches and methodologies, as well as any difficulties encountered. Not only professionals in electron microscopy will find valuable technical and methodical information here, but also those researchers in academia and industry involved in catalysis and imaging analytics.

About Josè Juan CalvinoJuan José Delgado
José Juan Calvino is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Cádiz Spain and former President of the Spanish Society of Microscopy. Since 2004 he has been leading the Electron Microscopy Facilities at the University of Cádiz. His research career has focused on the development of Advanced Electron Microscopy methodologies for the atomic scale analysis of nanomaterials which have been applied to the study of a wide spectrum of lanthanide containing systems of interest in Environmental Catalysis. Exploiting the highly varied possibilities of electron microscopes to understand in detail the chemical aspects of the synthesis function and deactivation of catalysts is the topic underlying most of his scientific production over 140 papers with an H-index of 36 (ISI WoS). He has also coauthored 9 patents and is coordinator of the University of Cadiz team within the two pan-european FP6 and FP7 ESTEEM Projects (Enabling Science and Technology through European Electron Microscopy). He counts with a large experience in TEM teaching having organized yearly the summer school TEM-UCA: Transmission Electron Microscopy of Nanomaterials since 2001. This school which currently constitutes a reference in basic training in STEM has already attracted hundreds of international students. Juan José Delgado is senior researcher at the University of Cádiz. He was Post-Doc from 2004 to 2007 at the Inorganic Chemistry Department of the Fritz-Haber Institute (FHI-Max-Planck Society Berlin Germany). He has participated in 4 spanish national projects 3 european and 4 sponsored by private companies. His research work has focused on heterogeneous catalysis for a sustainable energy production and environmental protection in particular on the rational design of innovative nanocatalysts with tailored properties by elucidating structure-reactivity relationships at molecular scale. He has combined different advanced electron microscopy techniques computer modelling volumetric adsorption and FTIR spectroscopy studies to identify the active phase present in several transition and noble metal based catalysts. He has published 3 book chapters and 90 papers in international peer reviewed (JCR indexed) journals with an H-index of 24. He has intensively contributed to training courses related to electron microscopy techniques at postgraduate master and doctorate level. He especially contributes to TEM-UCA: Transmission Electron Microscopy of Nanomaterials as well as to the training activities of the COST action MODENA.
