Here, the basic aspects of multiphase reactions, the importance of transport parameters vis-a-vis kinetics are clearly brought out, backed by a discussion of the principles of similarity in scale-up. The book treats new reactors in depth, in particular the ventury loop reactor and monolithic reactors, while also covering the problems encountered in retrofitting existing reactors for new reaction duties. Very simple yet theoretically sound design procedures are given, which require minimum time but yield reliable results, supplemented by rapid optimization tools in the form of Excel worksheets. A number of solved examples are included for each reactor type presented.

About Jacob A. MoulijnVishwas G. Pangarkar
Vishwas G. Pangarkar until recently was Professor and head of the Chemical Engineering Department of the University Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai India and actively engaged as a consultant in the chemical industry since 1974 for both Indian and overseas companies. His research interests include photocatalysis for environmental applications membrane and adsorptive separations mass transfer in multiphase reactors and process intensification. He is the (co)author of three books and over 130 professional papers. The only Indian winner of both Herdillia and NOCIL Awards which are for excellence in such diverse fields as basic research and industrial innovations and indicate the very broad range of Pangarkar's contributions to education and research in chemical engineering and in the entire spectrum of the chemical industry. Jacob A. Moulijn is Professor of Chemical Engineering at Delft University of Technology and Leiden University The Netherlands. The use of structured reactors for multiphase applications is a major current research topic. He is editor of five books (co)author of over 500 professional papers and two books and the holder of several international patents. He was visiting professor i.e. at the University of Delaware the Technical University of Wroclav the Technische Universitat Karlsruhe the University of Gent the University of Mumbai and the National University of Singapore. He was CTA for the United Nations in China from 1995 to 2000.
