After first meeting by the sea as children, the lives of six friends Bernard, Neville, Louis, Jinny, Susan and Rhoda intertwine from childhood to middle age. Divided into nine sections, the novel delves into their lives, exposing their achievements and failures as they question the meaning of life itself.

Woolfs rich poetic language reveals each characters aspirations, triumphs and regrets in a unique monologue style.
