Herein lies the fortunes and calamities of five generations of Surrey shopkeepers In turn, each of the proprietors of Twigmeres bedding store receives a visit from a travelling mattress turner, who promises the struggling shopkeeper longevity and prosperity in return for their custom. For the artful (and ageing) owner who accepts, business flourishes and youthfulness is miraculously restored to him, and to his most loyal customer. Word soon spreads of the mattress turners fabled gifts and business exceeds beyond all expectation. But not everyone is convinced. After all, how can renewed vigour and good fortune simply be down to that seasonal lift? There must be a catch. There is. Old grudges, like cumbersome mattresses, are difficult to shift.
