The book discusses the last Chilean earthquake which occurred on 27th February 2010. It happened at the end of summer vacations reaching a magnitude of 8.8 Mw with its epicentre in Cobquecura, in the Bio- Bio region. This phenomenon mainly affected the central Chile area which comprises of the regions of Araucania, Bio-Bio, Maule, General O'Higgins, Valparaiso and Metropolitan. At that date it was the fifth largest earthquake ever to have occurred on a worldwide scale. Dra. Luz A. CARDENAS-JIRON (Architect Doctor of Architecture and Urbanism Universidad Politecnica de Madrid) is Associate Professor in the Department of Urbanism and Director of Research and Development in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Chile where she teaches courses on sustainable architecture and sustainable cities. She has previously served as a Visiting Professor at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (Mexico) the University of Liege (Belgium) and the University of Bristol (UK). Her current research is on sustainable urban development environmental design and planning; solar thermal energy modeling. energy efficiency in architecture and urbanism urban and bioclimatic morphology; and sustainable urban development.
