Love, Family and Friendship: A Latin American Perspective

English

Love, Family and Friendship: A Latin American Perspective presents current research on different aspects of interpersonal relationships, including romantic and couple relations, family relationships and friendship, either conducted in Latin America or involving Latin American participants. The contributors to this volume are drawn from different universities in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico and USA. The chapters are based on papers presented at the First Latin American Meeting on Family and Interpersonal Relationships, which took place in Vitória, Brazil, in July of 2013, organized by the Latin American Network for Interpersonal Relationship Research.Latin America has a population of approximately 600 million people, according to estimative data from the World Bank. Latin American migrant populations are also important in both North America and Europe. Despite this, studies on interpersonal relationships in the continent are still scarce compared to those produced in other areas. This book includes the results of empirical quantitative and qualitative studies about romantic and couple relationships conducted in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Puerto Rico, dealing with themes such as satisfaction, violence and intercultural relationships. Family issues are discussed in different contexts and countries, including family relationships in Mexico, Brazil and Colombia. Studies about friendship include results from investigations conducted in Mexico and Brazil. The book is particularly aimed at students and researchers in psychology and family studies, sociology, communication studies, Latin American studies, and anthropology, and represents an important contribution to the development of relationship research in Latin America and to the fostering of international cooperation on the subject.
