The book presents a comprehensive overview of the field of hollow core optical fibers, both from the scientific as well as from the application viewpoint. The book covers subjects ranging from the various optical guidance mechanisms used in recently developed hollow core fibers, methods how to fabricate those and applications of such novel fibers with a focus on the domains of biophotonics and life science.

About Jürgen PoppMarkus A. Schmidt
Jurgen Popp is Professor at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena where he is Director of the Institute of Physical Chemistry. He is also Director of the Leibniz Institute of Photonic High Technology (IPHT) Jena. In the German Main Research Topic 'Biophotonik' (National Network financed by the BMBF) he serves as the speaker. Markus A. Schmidt is Professor for Fiber Optics at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena and is head of the research group Fiber Sensors at the Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technologies (IPHT). From 2006 to 2012 he was head of the group nanowire in the division of Philip Russell at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light. He spent a twelve months at the Centre of Plasmonics and Metamaterials at Imperial College London in 2011. He obtained his PhD in 2006 from the University of Technology Hamburg-Harburg. His main research topic is combining fibers and nanophotonics with applications in areas such as biophotonics optofluidics plasmonics and nonlinear optics.
