Lithospheric Architecture and Precambrian Geology of the Hoggar and Adjacent Areas: A Reference Case for Mapping and Modeling in Geosciences

English

This book presents the latest advances in mapping the geological structures and modeling the geodynamical and petrological processes in the Hoggar shield and adjacent areas of the northeast West African Craton, which is home to the oldest rocks in Algeria. Its respective chapters discuss the structural geology, geophysical methods, igneous processes, metamorphic petrology and metallogeny.

The mapping and modeling are based on satellite data and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), so the mapping ranges from continental to crystalline scale and the ages range from 3.2 Ga to the recent Cenozoic. Further, various types of commercial and open source software (partially developed by the authors) were used.

Gathering papers by respected experts in the methods applied and the Algerian Precambrian domain, the book offers a valuable reference guide to a range of mapping and modeling methodologies, as well as a geological and geophysical description of the Hoggar shield and the northeast West African Craton.

About

Mohamed Hamoudi is Full Professor of Geophysics at the Faculty of Earth Sciences Houari Boumediene University of Science and Technology in Algiers Algeria and Visiting Researcher at GFZ in Potsdam Germany. Professor Mohamed has published over 100 articles in international peer-reviewed ISI journals and book chapters. Abderrahmane Bendaoud is a full professor of Geology at the Faculty of Earth Sciences Houari Boumediene University of Science and Technology in Algiers Algeria. Professor Bendaoud has contributed to research on the geodynamic evolution of the Eburnean Pan-African and Hercynian orogenies multi-source geological mapping the nature and evolution of the continental crust geochemistry and the application of mineral equilibrium modelling techniques to study metamorphic processes in UHT HT and HP metamorphic rocks. He has published over 60 articles in international peer-reviewed ISI journals and book chapters. Jean-Louis Bodinier headed the Géosciences Montpellier laboratory at the University of Montpellier 2 (France). He is currently Emeritus Professor at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (Morocco) He has extensive experience in the study of the structure composition and evolution of the continental lithospheric mantle and of interactions between the estthenosphere and lithosphere (metasomatism igneous refertilisation and thermochemical erosion) based on the study of mantle rocks (massifs and inclusions in lavas). His research also focuses on (1) the distribution of trace elements in the Earth's mantle from the submineral scale (microphases) to geochemical reservoirs and (2) the simulation of geochemical fractionation and isotopic decoupling linked to magma transport and interactions between molten rocks in the upper mantle. He has published over 150 papers in international peer-reviewed ISI journals. Khadidja Ouzegane is a full professor in the Faculty of Earth Sciences at the Houari Boumediene University of Science and Technology in Algiers Algeria. She is a member of the Algerian Academy of Science and Technology. Professor Ouzegane has contributed to research on the nature and evolution of the continental crust the geochemistry and distribution of rare earth elements in carbonatites and the application of mineral equilibrium modelling techniques to study metamorphic processes in the Archean and Precambrian rocks of the Hoggar (southern Algeria). She has published over 100 articles in international peer-reviewed ISI journals.
