David Mullineaux was commissioned from Sandhurst into the Royal Signals in December 1957. After the young officers qualifying course he was posted to Germany to the Signal Troop attached to 47 Guided Weapons Regiment Royal Artillery which had been recently deployed there with Corporal guided missiles. His next posting was to Kenya in 1961 for nearly five years firstly with a British Brigade Signal Squadron during which time he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and saw active service for three months in Kuwait and then with the Kings African Rifles Signal Squadron. On completion of this tour he returned to Catterick for the two-year Telecommunications Engineering course during which he qualified as a Chartered Engineer and as a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. This was followed by another tour in Germany as second-in-command of an Armoured Brigade Signal Squadron. On promotion to Major he was posted to a technical staff appointment at the Signals Research and Development Establishment where he was involved with the introduction of the new Clansman radios system. After two years this was followed by a tour at Sandhurst as the Chief Instructor of the Signals Wing. Then it was back to Germany this time to the Corps Signal Regiment and subsequently to a staff appointment in the Ministry of Defence. After this in1978 he attended a course at the National Defence College. Now a Lieutenant Colonel his next appointment was as Commander Royal Signals in Cyprus for a pleasant three years during which he organised a five-day visit by the recently appointed Colonel-in- Chief of the Corps HRH Princess Anne. This was followed by his last tour in the Army in the Ministry of Defence planning the introduction of the Ptarmigan communication system.He retired in 1985 after 27 years of service and took up appointments in the civil sector firstly with Racal Communications and then with the overseas division of British Telecom retiring finally in 1994.
