The Small Arms Survey 2010 focuses on gangs and non-state armed groups. Gang violence, while typically directed at other gang members, can account for a major portion of social violence. Armed groups - whatever their orientation to the state - are of growing concern in conflict and post-conflict settings, where their activities can have serious repercussions for human security. This volume reviews a range of issues related to gangs and armed groups, exploring their functions, roles, and use of violence, as well as emerging efforts to address the damage they inflict on society.
