Mary Elizabeth Braddon''s Belgravia: A London Magazine and the World of Anglo-Jewry, Jews and Judaism, 1866-1899
English
By (author): Ruth Morris
This work has grown out of a previous study entitled Mary Elizabeth Braddon and the Jewish Question: A Victorian English Novelist and the Worlds of Anglo-Jewry, Zionism and Judaism, 1859-1913, which focused solely upon Braddons novels and used them as a lens through which the changes in the Anglo-Jewish community throughout her lifetime could be charted within her work. Although the study examines over seventy of her novels, any understanding of `the Jewish Question in relation to Braddon is incomplete without also considering the portrayal of Jewish people and Jewish customs within her periodical, Belgravia: A London Magazine (1866-1899). References to Jews, Judaism or Jewish life in general span the entire time period of the magazine.
