Diatom Cultivation for Biofuel, Food and High-Value Products

English

Diatom Cultivation for Biofuel, Food, and High-Value Products covers the scientific, economic, and practical aspects of using diatoms for multiple purposes. This book is an integrated approach to diatom cultivation, including discussions on techniques, harvesting methods, and innovative technologies. Diatom research has spawned more interest in biofuel production, serving as smart containers for biosensing pollutants and components of interest when integrated with different nanomaterials.

A unique set of features and topics about diatom products are discussed in this 20-chapter book. It implements an integrated approach to diatom cultivation and includes discussions on cultivation techniques. It showcases the diversity of high-value products that can be derived from diatoms, such as pigments, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds. Furthermore, it discusses the prospects of diatom cultivation and looks into ongoing research about potential emerging applications in the fields of biofuel, food, and high-value products.

About

Vandana Vinayak is an assistant professor in the School of Applied Sciences at Dr. Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidhyalaya University Madhya Pradesh India. Her research focuses on diatom nanoengineering sustainable algal technologies and valorization. She has published 50 research articles 20 review articles 12 chapter books and two published patents. She reviews the Indian government and French and UK funding agencies. Vinayak won the Women Scientist Award and the Noel Gold Medal Award.   Richard Gordons involvement with diatoms goes back to 1970 with his capillarity model for their gliding motility published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. He later worked on a diffusion-limited aggregation model for diatom morphogenesis which led to the first paper ever published on diatom nanotechnology in 1988. He organized the first workshop on diatom nanotech in 2003.
