Multiferroics: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications

English

In this handbook and ready reference, the editors, themselves prolific researchers in the field, have assembled an international team of pioneers in multiferroics to review the fundamental groundwork as well as the recent advances made possible by a combination of clever experimentation and sophisticated computation.
They present this complex topic in a readily comprehensible manner, clearly dividing the contents into the three parts of synthesis, characterization and applications. The first section provides a detailed overview of the interplay between experimental and computational approaches for a successful synthesis of multiferroic bulk materials and thin films. The second part is devoted to the characterization of the complex order structure of multiferroics by radiation- and particle-based techniques, followed by chapters focusing on the major classes of multiferroic systems. The final part discusses such applications as memory devices, logic circuitry, magnetic field sensors and tunable microwave oscillators and phase shifters, supplemented by a look at future directions within the field.
The comprehensiveness of this book makes it useful for experienced scientists while also encouraging newcomers to engage in further research.

About

Professor Ramamoorthy Ramesh graduated from the University of California Berkeley with a PhD in Materials Science. He joined Bellcore in 1989 and initiated research in several key technology areas including ferroelectric nonvolatile memories. He has extensive experience in the use of advanced characterization techniques to understand high technology materials and in the science and technology of complex materials. Ramamoorthy Ramesh joined the University of Maryland in 1995 and was promoted to Professor in 1999 and Distinguished Professor in 2003. In 2004 he joined the University of California faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering and Physics departments. Professor Lane W. Martin received his BS in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and MS and PhD from the University of California Berkeley. Following his PhD he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Quantum Materials Program Materials Science Division Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Lane Martin joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an Assistant Professor in August 2009.
