Bale Out!: Escaping Occupied France with the Resistance

English

By (author): Alfie Martin

A remarkable tale of a local airman, this book is based on a true story. It is a tribute to all those who the author describes as 'helpers' - the men and women of the Resistance, and other groups, who risked their lives, and sometimes paid the ultimate sacrifice, helping Allied servicemen to escape from German-occupied Europe. Alfie Martin, of No 102 Squadron RAF, tells his story, of being shot down over the French-Belgian border in a Halifax and being guided through France, over the Pyrennees into Spain and back on to British territory at Gibraltar. This book will be of interest to those with an interest in Second World War events, as well as those with an interest in RAF history, and the underground organisations of the time. See more

About Alfie Martin

Alfie Martin is a Belfast man. He was born at Finaghy in 1920 and was educated at Friends School Lisburn before taking up employment with the Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Company (now an almost forgotten part of the Royal Sun Alliance Group) at Wellington Place Belfast. In 1938 like many other young men a feeling of patriotism hit him and he joined a Territorial Army company of Royal Engineers. Called up in August 1939 he served at Kilroot Helen's Bay and Magilligan before joining the RAF in May 1941. It was while serving as an Observer on Halifax bomber HR663 with No 102 Squadron in Yorkshire that his aircraft was shot down and his remarkable tale began.
