Restoration and Recovery: Regenerating Land and Communities

English

By (author): Dr. Heather Moore Dr. Howard Fox

With contributions from international academics and practitioners, this International Conference of the British Land Reclamation Society, addresses the current issues and challenges for restoration and regeneration of land and communities during a period of economic uncertainty and recovery. The conference is to be held from 7th to 9th September at the University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, South Wales. In this area, over the past 40 years, land reclamation has resulted in major transformations providing new sites for commercial, residential and environmental renewal. Hence, the area provides an ideal backdrop from which to consider the technological and engineering developments that can be applied on an international scale. It will focus not only on the technical aspects of land restoration but also on regeneration including planning and community involvement in the successful environmental, economic and social recovery of such sites. Topics covered include: * Planning, regeneration and economics * Tackling contamination * Risk assessment * Remediation of difficult sites * Legislation and legal liability * Biodiversity and reclamation * Soils and reclamation * Improving water quality * Innovative techniques * Reclamation and regeneration case studies including: Blaenavon Industrial Landscape World Heritage Site Bargoed - regeneration of a town and its environs after closure of the colliery Coed Darcy - a former oil refinery site with particular issues regarding contaminants Ebbw Vale steelworks - a huge and complex site for decontamination and redevelopment Brecon Beacons - soil and ecological restoration after pipeline construction See more
