What should a girl do when after her father`s death she discovers that the man she promised to marry is her half brother? Rosamund is unable to tell her secret, and to protect Francis and his mother she flees all that she holds dear in Cornwall without explanation to start a new life. In Yorkshire, following a traumatic accident, she embarks on a nursing career. She strives to rebuild the wreckage of her dreams in her search for happiness, while bereft Francis, a Bodmin Moor farmer, remains battling to salvage his ruined hopes. But life conspires after many years to bring the lovers face to face, with unexpected results. Their separate journeys are inhabited by intriguing characters: motherly Yorkshire landlady Mrs Wilson; sinister Ace; Rosamund`s nursing friends - staunch Helen, gritty Amy and vain Sandra; Cornish farmhand Dan`s earthy humour; tragic child bride Ruth, and the elfin half-gypsy child Meri - among others.
