Understanding and Supporting Children and Adults on the Autism Spectrum
Loose-leaf | English
This unique resource, informed by both research and practice, is designed not only to help people understand autism spectrum conditions, but to give them a person-centred framework of intervention and support for children or adults on the autism spectrum. Key features: Based on a sound model of good practice; written by experts; addresses compliance with new legislation; rich visual material; interactive and engaging. About the resource The new Autism Act means that for the first time the NHS and local authorities could face legal action if they fail to provide the support that people with autism need. This will include providing better training for health and social care staff working with people with autism spectrum conditions. Using this resource will help staff and individuals to comply with the new legislation. Research shows that with good support, people with autism can lead fulfilled lives and make a real contribution to their communities. However, staff, carers and services can struggle to understand the true nature of these often complex conditions and consequently, people with autism may be consigned to live difficult and unhappy lives. At the heart of the resource is the SPELL framework, which uses cognitive learning theory to instil five key pillars of good practice: Structure Positive approaches and expectations Empathy Low arousal Links The SPELL framework is not the only element of good support for people with autism but it does lay the foundations for autism-friendly practices on which to build other behavioural and educational approaches. The resource is supported with experiences from people with autism and their families to demonstrate how it is necessary to understand the individual and how autism affects the person.Contents include: Module 1: Introduction Module 2: Understanding autism Module 3: Supporting people on the autism spectrum Module 4: Instructions and resources for the trainer Module 5: The evidence base and resources for further reading This pack contains: A rich collection of visual and print material including CD-rom with PowerPoint presentations, textbased script for trainer, illustrative colour photos, worksheets, handouts, group and individual exercises, video clips with staff and parents explaining aspects of autism and interventions, and examples of real sessions based on the SPELL framework.
