Samurai''s Granddaughter: a wanderer
English
By (author): Taka Rothenberg
The author documents her life, growing up in wartime Japan, a world largely unknown in the West. After the war she is encouraged by her grandmother to seek her fortune elsewhere, and she sets sail for the United States, where she studies art and meet her troubled future husband, Bennett. They move to New York where their eccentric household is expanded by a daughter, Michelle, and a retinue of animals, including dogs, cats, birds and even a raccoon. Ever Wanderers, Taka and Bennett frequently move house, in their quest for some kind of physical and spiritual fulfilment. Taka writes frankly about her own troubled family and her rejection by Bennett''s Orthodox Jewish relations. The book finishes in England, the place of her third global migration. The story unfolds like splashes of paint on a canvas, her wanderings, both physical and spiritual, weaving together to form a fascinating whole.
