This book is a guide to better understanding and utilising the real practice of human factors and ergonomics (HFE), conveying the perspectives and experiences of practitioners and other stakeholders in a variety of industrial sectors, organisational settings and working contexts. It blends the extant literature on the nature of practice (including research application) with reflections from experience, and offers insights into the achievement (and non-achievement) of the core goals of HFE, namely improved system performance and human wellbeing. The book sets out to be honest about HFE as done, rather than just HFE as imagined, discussing the factors that really led to success or failure, the emergent and unforeseen properties of interventions, and the compromises, trade-offs, short-cuts and workarounds that are necessary in practice. Throughout, Human Factors and Ergonomics in Practice considers HFE work from a systemic perspective, striving always to maintaining a systems focus and holistic approach, to consider the purpose of the work, the context and the interactions. It deals with the relationship and tension between research and practice, examining the experience of research application in the real world. To conclude, it considers the lessons learned and not learned by the profession, as well as the likely future of the profession. In summary, this book offers invaluable insights for all who work with HFE or aspire to do so. It is written for all HFE practitioners, students and researchers, as well as allied practitioners, policymakers and the clients of HFE products and services.
