The Addolorata Cemetery

Hardback | English

By (author): Conrad Thake

The Addolorata Cemetery is the magnum opus of the architect Emmanuele Luigi Galizia. It is an outstanding manifestation of Gothic Revivalism and Romanticism in Malta during British colonial rule.

The main objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive overview of the cemetery’s historical development, its architectural history and a critical art-historical appraisal of the cemetery complex including the Addolorata Church, the various family chapels and individual funerary monuments.

This is the third volume in a series of monographs dedicated to nineteenth-century cemeteries. Contributions are by academics and restoration professionals who have all pursued research on the Addolorata Cemetery.

Photography by Dr Charles Paul Azzopardi captures the aesthetics and provides the reader with a rich portfolio of images. This book will contribute to a greater appreciation of the Addolorata Cemetery as an outstanding architectural and cultural heritage asset.
