LIVERPOOL TO GOOLE: A Colourful Journey along the Lancashire & Yorkshire Main Line in the Late 20th Century
English
With nearly 250 colour photos by Stephen Chapman this book illustrates the old Lancashire & Yorkshire main line through its many phases and changes in character from its western extremity in the busy Merseyrail electrified commuter network of Liverpool, through Wigan, Bolton, Salford and Manchester's Victoria station before its 1990s rebuild. Then follows the portion into Yorkshire busy with commuter trains and heavy freight passed Rochdale and the breathtakingly scenic and dramatic Pennine section through Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Sowerby Bridge with its succession of viaducts and tunnels. From there the book continues to follow the line to Wakefield, Pontefract and the important railway centre of Knottingley which serviced endless trains to and from the mighty Drax power station. Finally we complete our journey along the remaining few miles to Goole along a section reduced to a single track rural byway used by only a handful of trains a day - the exact opposite of the western end.
