Arthur Szyk: Soldier in Art

English

By (author):

Arthur Szyk (1894–1951) worked in Poland, France, the UK, Canada and the US and was renowned during the first half of the twentieth century for his prolific illustrations in books, newspapers and magazines. His work provides a visual and often acerbic comment on contemporary issues, including World War II, the Holocaust, and the creation of the State of Israel. But his canon also includes beautiful, highly-coloured book illustrations, notably his Passover Haggadah, which has been widely distributed both in the US and Israel. This publication, with its original essays by James Kettlewell, Tom Freudenheim, Michael Berenbaum and Irvin Ungar, brings together the diverse aspects of Szyk's career and examines and decodes his highly detailed artwork. The volume includes over 200 full-colour plates of key works by Szyk arranged by subject / theme, a time-line of Szyk's life, an extensive list of museum and major gallery exhibitions, a complete bibliography of his illustrated books and photographs of the artist, including self-portraits. AUTHOR: Irvin Ungar is the curator of The Arthur Szyk Society in Burlingame, CA. SELLING POINTS: . An indispensable publication on one of the most extraordinary artists of his time. .
