Exposure: a project to map, to provoke to confront, to engage, to reimagine and to investigate, design, research and practice in landscape architecture. How is landscape (architecture) researched? What does the notion research imply for a design process, that becomes practice? What relations emerge between the academy and practice? What role does research take in a design process in landscape architecture? Is the design process research? Practice based design research in Landscape Architecture is now producing work that is exemplary in dealing with the complexities of the discipline. However, current design research publications do not offer satisfactory answers to the question whether and how research can capture the intangible, complex matters of landscape architecture through design. Investigating current strands of project based research, it is evident that a tension between the pragmatics, performance and social position in approaching design exists. This publication aims to contribute to the discourse by addressing these positions in individual contributions that are based in one of these approaches and while reflecting on the other two approaches differentiate and illuminate the individual position in the landscape architecture specific design research context.
