There is an old cherry tree in the village of South Rosy Clouds that grows strange, bitter-tasting fruit. One day, while standing alone under the ripening fruit, Tilly hears a burst of laughter. She discovers that the housemaster used to have a lovely daughter named Little Green, who died just before turning five years old.
