Educated at Dudley Grammar School, the now University of Wolverhampton and Aston University, the author qualified as a metallurgist and spent his working career almost equally divided between manufacturing industry and academia. His period of National Service was spent as a specialist Ammunition Technician in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
