Attacked by wolves, and with highly-strung young men all striving for glory, the adventures of the hunt continue until Danny double-guesses Kuillok, and with Tasgo's help, captures him. But Kuillok's fate, and Raynes', must wait till after the funeral fire and feast for those who have already died because of Kuillok. The ceremony for the dead brings songs, stories and challenges, a mix of bonding, shared experiences and private grief. The presence of Danny's whole family here is brought into question, and Danny is afraid that Raynes, as an unconnected stranger, is most at risk. Surprisingly, Raynes rises in the Druid's respect as 'a keeper of the lore', and Kuillok, condemned, is given into the detective's keeping for trial 'Underhill'. The funeral feast builds friendships and adds tensions, with its dark and mournful stories. Meanwhile Kelly has been talking to Kuillok, and has a simple solution to the complex problem of taking this older version of Kevin Wilcox back to a future where his younger self is still unaware of time-travel. Dugal tests Raynes' fitness as a suitor for his daughter, Moira. But now Tasgo's wolf bite is infected, and his life hangs in the balance.
