Into the tensions and alarms of September 1939, two women are unwillingly forced together: middle-class Marjorie Anderson-Grey, confident, imperious and formidable; and her lodger Vicky Jones, passionate working-class teacher, evacuated with her school, from the impoverished East End. Jeremy Rowe's novel sets these two strong women on a wartime collision course, and pays tribute to the steadfast commitment of ordinary people coping with extraordinary dangers.
