Surface Chemistry of Colloidal Nanocrystals

The chemistry of nanomaterials has developed considerably in the past two decades, and concepts that have emerged from these developments are now well established. The surface modification of nanoparticles is a subject of intense research interest given its importance for many applications across a number of disciplines. This comprehensive guide is the first to be devoted to the surface chemistry of inorganic nanocrystals. Following an introduction to the physical chemistry of surfaces, chapters cover topics such as the surface modification of nanoparticles, water compatible, polymer-based, and inorganic nanocomposites, as well as relevant applications in catalysis, biotechnology and nanomedicine. Highlighting recent advances, Surface Chemistry of Colloidal Nanocrystals provides an integrated approach to chemical aspects related to the surface of nanocrystals. Written by prestigious scientists, this will be a useful resource for students and researchers working in surface science, nanoscience and materials science as well as those interested in the applications of the nanomaterials in areas such as health science, biology, and environmental engineering.

About Ana Luísa Daniel-da-SilvaTito Trindade

Ana Luísa Daniel-da-Silva graduated in Chemical Engineering (2000) by Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon Portugal) in 2000 and got her Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Alicante (Spain) in 2005. Since June 2009 she is Researcher at CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials and Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro (UA). Her main scientific interests concern the development of nanostructured materials including functional nanoparticles and nanocomposites for applications in nanomedicine bionanotechnology and water remediation. In particular she is interested in novel strategies for surface modification with biopolymers aiming the development of green nanosorbents and biocompatible nanomaterials. She has authored or co-authored 2 patents 7 book chapters and more than 90 papers in international peer reviewed journals with more than 2000 citations. She has co-edited the book Nanocomposite Particles for Bio-applications-Materials and Bio-interfaces (Pan Stanford 2011). She has been strongly involved to several teaching activities namely by lecturing topics for post-graduation students within the subjects Nanochemistry and Frontiers of Inorganic Chemistry. As part of her academic activities she has been involved in communicating chemistry for non-specialized audiences in particular issues related to Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials. Tito Trindade got his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Imperial College London in 1996 working on pioneer research devoted to the synthesis of nanocrystals of semiconductors under the supervision of Professor Paul OBrien. Currently he is Professor at the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro and member of the Aveiro Institute of Materials-CICECO at the University of Aveiro. He is co-author of about 300 scientific publications with more than 9000 citations and co-editor of the book Nanocomposite Particles for Bio-Applications: Materials and Bio-Interfaces. He was the first director of the doctoral program in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the University of Aveiro and he is a member of the international editorial board of the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry. His current scientific interests have main focus on the chemistry of colloidal inorganic nanoparticles and derived nanocomposites namely for health and environmental applications. He has been involved in several teaching duties that include courses of Nanochemistry for graduate and the scientific supervision of post-graduate students. Tito Trindade was appointed Director of the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro (2015-2019) following an international call for the position.
